A Language Learning Mobile App

A companion app focuses on simplifying the process of booking language classes.

Mobile

2020 – 2021

Lingoda offers language learners an immersive learning experience within the online classroom, along with a guided curriculum. In order to further support our learners, we wanted to create a better experience for scheduling classes and practicing in their free time. One of the obvious ideas for us was a mobile app.

We started the discovery process with surveys and focus interviews to validate the need for a mobile app. And to be sure we're addressing the right problems we designed our process around regular cycles of prototyping and face to face user interviews, validating every step of the way with the input from real users.

Challenge

Kick-off the discovery process of a companion app to our live class experience which focuses on simplifying the process of booking Lingoda's online language classes.

Role

Research, UI/UX Design, Copywriting, and Usability Testing

Platforms

iOS and Android

We set up our app's architecture based on the two main use-cases: 'I want to find time slots for a specific lesson/topic that I'm interested in' and 'I want to make sure that I remember to attend my classes'.

Since an average Lingoda lesson can have multiple time slots per day, displaying a high volume of information in a limited space was a challenge. We went through a series of layout experiments, while learning the most meaningful data to be displayed along with the time slots.

Listening to users' requests, we added a feature to let students join classes on their mobile devices. However, the live class experience is not optimized to mobile because the teachers would be sharing their desktop screen.

Furthermore, when a student join class on their phone, other students are often bothered by that because they have low audio quality or are not fully present. So we made sure to inform mobile users as much as we can to ensure the best live class quality.

After the initial launch, we added a new feature 'Flashcards' as Lingoda's first attempt at providing our students with self-learning activities outside of classes.
